Nutrition and Wellness at The Doggie Den

At The Doggie Den we do whatever it takes to support an optimal lifestyle for you and your dog. Of course, nutrition is an essential piece of the picture. So we researched what’s really in pet food, and how it’s actually made [read more in our April Newsletter]. When the data was in, two foods surfaced as the best in the industry: Wellness and Flint River Ranch.

A dog’s intestinal track is short – much shorter than a human’s. So it can only function well when food can be digested quickly. Wellness and Flint River Ranch dog foods are oven baked (not extruded),

which increases both the speed of digestion and the availability of the nutrients in the food. Baked foods also taste better, so there’s no need to spray on a greasy coating as the big name brands do. Extruded foods, on the other hand, create more mass in your dog’s stomach, causing bloat and slowed digestion.

Wellness and Flint River Ranch are made with human quality ingredients: both companies use suppliers that sell to restaurants and to the human food industry. Their ingredients are fresh fruits and vegetables; healthy grains; and chicken, fish, duck, or venison. Wellness adds human grade fishmeal to keep the balance of digestible proteins at the right level. Wellness also uses a Culligan water filtration system in its plants to filter out pesticides and chemicals commonly found in ground water.

Flint River Ranch foods are formulated to help your pet’s body holistically heal itself through proper nutrition. Like Wellness, they contain only human grade ingredients. In addition, Flint River Ranch adds vitamins; chelated minerals; probiotics; and live digestive enzymes.

Neither Flint River Ranch nor Wellness use rendered by-products (offal, heads, feet, feathers) as the mass produced name brands do. Nor do they use chemical preservatives or substances like BHA, BHT or ethoxyquin, all of which are associated with allergies and nervous system disorders in animals. Flint River Ranch and Wellness simply mix wholesome ingredients together; roll them out or shape them; then they bake them at proper temperatures, which breaks down hard-to-digest starches into easy-to-digest dextrines.
